Weight loss is often viewed synonymously with wellness and personal training rather than one of their positive consequences. However, when the sole or primary goal is an expedited, sustained weight loss trend of 1 to 2 percent of bodyweight per week, the most effective approach will be a hybrid of wellness, personal training, and nutrition strategies. The highest chance for success will come from a qualified coach that simultaneously occupies all of these spaces, putting them in the unique position to assess candidacy and apply a multi-faceted approach for expedited weight loss.

Expedited Weight Loss is a difficult journey that requires a very high level of motivation to be successful. Limited self-efficacy, learned helplessness, emotional barriers, and other factors may negatively affect client autonomy, particularly in conjunction with a deadline. A few of the greatest motivators are:

  • desire to no longer be categorized as obese
  • address metabolic syndrome, pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes and/or other health consequences
  • meet short-term aesthetic goals related to a special occasion that may include meaningful memories that will be photographed

Certain diet fads may serve as motivators and facilitate a dietary framework for certain types of people. However, a very low energy diet (VLED) resulting in Caloric averages below 5600 per week will require a prescription meal plan to be obtained from a Registered Dietician or Physician.

Unless healthy patterns across the wellness spectrum are integrated, the loss of body fat through expedited weight loss carries a high risk of a quick, demoralizing reversal. This cycle of weight loss and weight gain is part of the revolving door phenomenon seen at big box gyms and often capitalized on by trainers for repeat business. Supplementing a weight loss program with a wellness coaching routine will establish permanent healthy behaviors to offset the risk of sustained regression.
